The world portrayed in Yellowstone is breathtaking, and there is a reason why the show’s producers chose this particular location to shoot it. Here, that world is more like reality. The valley really is that amazing, a unique place populated with exceptional people. It is a hidden gem where tech moguls, movie stars, world renowned scientists, fishing guides, and organic farmers rub elbows at the local brewery, and no one asks for your autograph.
While the new series Yellowstone is more high profile than most, this won’t be the first time that the Bitterroot Valley has achieved notoriety thanks to a Hollywood production. After A River Runs Through It revealed the beauty of Montana to the world at large, the number of people moving to Big Sky Country skyrocketed. Even so, the entire population of the state remains less than that in any of the ten largest cities in the U.S. No more than 50,000 people call Ravalli County home, with a density of only 17 people per square mile.
While at first glance that might sound desolate to some urban dwellers, the unique geography of the Bitterroot Valley makes the reality much less so. With only 25 miles separating the Sapphire Mountains on the east from the rugged Bitterroot range to the west, the majority of its population is congregated on the valley floor. An aerial view reveals an orderly checkerboard of parcels in a variety of sizes marked by roads, rivers, and irrigation canals. It feels both connected and uncluttered at the same time.
The world of Yellowstone is based on agriculture and wealth, and the same could be said for the Bitterroot Valley. From its humble roots in orchard tracts and truck farms, the valley has grown to become known as one of the last best places to live, thanks to a wealth of natural resources, beauty, and enterprising inhabitants.
